Wang Ying (王英) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Maoming City, Guangdong Province, sentenced to four and a half years in prison in December 2025. She is a former engineer and jade expert at the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Born in March 1959, Wang worked as a laser Raman spectroscopy analyst and won recognition as an advanced worker at the Guangzhou Regional Scientific Instrument Collaboration Network. After the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, she became a target: she was given two years of forced labor at the Guangzhou City Women’s Labor Camp in July 2000. In April 2008, officers from the Tianhe District Police Department arrested her; the Tianhe District Court later sentenced her to three years, which she served at the Guangdong Province Women’s Prison. In May 2011, shortly after her release, her employer fired her and reduced her years of service to zero in her pension calculation, leaving her with no pension at all. In July 2017, after she called the central government’s discipline-inspection team to complain about her dismissal and lost pension, local officials harassed her, and she left Guangzhou to live with her children in Maoming.
On December 13, 2023, Wang accompanied fellow practitioner Tao Yonghong to visit Tao’s 90-year-old mother, Ding Jiaxi, in Maoming. More than ten officers — including Wang Jinhai and Yang Xiaosi from the Maonan District domestic security division and Zhang Chong from the Guandu Police Station — raided Ding’s home, then searched the homes of Wang and Tao, confiscating computers, phones, storage cards, DVDs, Falun Gong books, and informational materials. Wang and Tao were placed under criminal detention at the Maoming City First Detention Center on December 14, 2023. Formal arrest warrants were issued on January 19, 2024.
The Maonan District Procuratorate indicted both women on April 12, 2024. Their lawyer traveled from out of town to review the case files on April 2, 2024, but was barred from doing so; the prosecutor, Yang Xiande, nevertheless wrote on the indictment that he had “incorporated the defendants’ legal opinion.”
On June 25, 2025, the Maonan District Court tried Wang and Tao. Four lawyers defended the two women, arguing for acquittal on constitutional freedom-of-belief grounds and requesting the recusal of the prosecutor and of judges who were Communist Party members. Presiding judge Tan Wei rejected the recusal requests; the defense lawyers said the prosecutor could not answer their questions and that the judges intervened to help him. The hearing ran from about 9:45 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
On December 1, 2025, the court convicted both women and sentenced each to four and a half years in prison plus a 25,000 yuan fine. Wang and Tao submitted appeals they had prepared in advance. No verified information about the appeal’s outcome or Wang’s current place of detention has been published since.
