Wang Zhong (汪中) — Detained Elder of Beijing Zion Church

Wang Zhong (汪中) is an elder of the Beijing Zion Church, an unregistered Protestant house church, and one of eight church leaders who remained in detention awaiting trial in Beihai, Guangxi, as of September 2026 following the nationwide crackdown on the church that began in October 2025.

Note: this is not Wang Zhong (王忠) the retired bank engineer from Kuancheng, Hebei, who is profiled separately on this site — a different person with a different Chinese surname character.

Role in the church

Church documents and human-rights reporting identify Wang Zhong as an elder (长老) of Zion Church. He was listed among the 18 pastors and co-workers formally arrested in November 2025 after the October 9–10, 2025 raids in which police detained about 30 church members across multiple cities.

Arrest and detention

Wang Zhong was detained in the October 2025 sweep and was among the 18 leaders formally arrested in November 2025. The detained leaders were transferred to Beihai, where the men are held in the Beihai Second Detention Center, according to Fortify Rights, which interviewed relatives of the detainees in August 2026.

On June 18, 2026, nine of the detained church leaders were released on bail but continued to face charges. Wang Zhong was not among those released; he remained one of the eight still held awaiting trial, according to Fortify Rights’ September 21, 2026 investigation update.

Charges

The leaders were initially detained on suspicion of “illegally using information networks.” After the case moved to the review-and-prosecution stage, prosecutors changed the charges to fraud and illegal business operations. Wang Zhong, together with Wang Lin and Wu Qiuyu, was charged with illegal business operations: the indictment alleged that from 2020 to 2025 the three sold religious “course packages” online without authorization, receiving more than 2 million yuan.

Wang Zhong has not been reported to have been tried or sentenced; the eight detainees’ trial, scheduled for August 14–18, 2026 at the Yinhai District People’s Court in Beihai, was postponed after defense lawyers objected that they had insufficient time to review the case files. No verdict had been reported as of the sources’ publication dates.

Status

Detained (awaiting trial) — held in Beihai as of September 21, 2026 (Fortify Rights). No conviction or sentence has been reported.
