Wang Zongyao (王宗尧)

Wang Zongyao (王宗尧), known in English as Gregory Wong, is a Hong Kong actor serving a six-year-two-month prison sentence for rioting during the storming of the Legislative Council (LegCo) complex on July 1, 2019.

On the evening of July 1, 2019, protesters broke into the LegCo building during the anti-extradition-bill protests. Wang entered the LegCo chamber that night. He was later charged with rioting. At trial he pleaded not guilty, telling the court he had gone inside only to deliver two phone chargers to reporters covering the break-in and had left shortly afterward. The judge rejected that account, finding that Wang’s presence and conduct — including interacting with demonstrators — encouraged the rioters, and convicted him.

On March 16, 2024, the West Kowloon court sentenced Wang to six years and two months’ imprisonment. He was one of 14 defendants charged over the incident; 12 were convicted of rioting and received sentences ranging from four years to six years and ten months.

Wang appealed against both his conviction and his sentence. The Court of Appeal (case no. CACC 63/2024) dismissed the appeals of all seven appellants in the case, upholding the convictions and sentences.

As of the latest reporting, Wang remains in prison serving his sentence. No release has been reported.
