Media Profile & Archive
This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Wu Changgui, a Xiangtan worker documented by Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch in reporting on the 1989 democracy movement and its aftermath in Hunan.
Documented record
Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch reported that Wu was 30 and helped organize the Xiangtan Workers’ Autonomous Federation, serving as a member of its Standing Committee. The source reports that he organized workers’ demonstrations, sit-ins and strikes on several occasions and was arrested in June 1989.
The report states that in early 1990 the Xiangtan City Public Security Bureau imposed three years of re-education through labor. This was an administrative detention measure rather than a criminal-court sentence.
Evidence limits
Current status: unknown. No reliable release or post-detention history has been established in the sources reviewed. The nominal term should not be treated as proof of actual release.
