Wu Yanna (吴燕娜) is a former English teacher from Jieyang, Guangdong, and a Falun Gong practitioner who has been repeatedly detained since 2000 for her faith. On April 5, 2025, she was detained again at her home in Jiedong, and in late December 2025 the Jiedong District Court sentenced her to one year in prison. Her sentence ended on April 4, 2026.
Background
Wu Yanna is a native of Jieyang City, Guangdong Province. She formerly taught English at Meigang Middle School in Jiedong County (now Jiedong District). She began practicing Falun Gong in the 1990s.
The 2025 detention and one-year sentence
On April 5, 2025, officers from the domestic-security (国保) unit of the Jiedong branch of the Jieyang Public Security Bureau, together with officers from the Yunlu and Quxi police stations, entered her home, detained her, and searched the premises. According to the case record, police said she had spoken with residents about Falun Gong in Beiyang village, Yunlu town, Jiedong District.
She was held at the Jieyang City Detention Center. In late December 2025, the Jiedong District Court sentenced her to one year’s imprisonment; the charge was not reported. The documented term ran through April 4, 2026.
Earlier persecution (as reported)
Minghui’s January 2026 report recounts a longer history of detention:
- June 2000: After traveling to Beijing to petition at Tiananmen, she was detained by Beijing police, held ten days in a detention center, then taken back to Jieyang and detained a further two weeks.
- January 2001: Detained by local police on January 24, her home searched, and held more than eight months at the Jiedong County Detention Center. After refusing to renounce her faith she was beaten. She was later sent to “brainwashing” sessions; after escaping one session she lived in hiding.
- April 2004: Seized by the “610 Office” in Tianhe District, Guangzhou, and held at a “legal education school” and the Tianhe District Detention Center.
- December 2004: Sentenced to eight years by the Tianhe District Court; on March 10, 2005 she was transferred to the Guangdong Women’s Prison, where she was reported to have suffered abuse.
