Wu Yilong (吴义龙), born May 1, 1967 in Zongyang County, Anhui Province according to institutional biographical records, is a democracy activist who became a leading organizer of the China Democracy Party in Zhejiang in 1998. He was sentenced in 1999 to eleven years’ imprisonment for subversion of state power and later completed the term.
Education and political activity
Institutional records state that Wu graduated from Anhui University in 1991 and entered a master’s program at Zhejiang University in 1996. Human-rights reporting identifies him as a Zhejiang CDP organizer and spokesperson for the party’s Zhejiang Provincial Preparatory Committee. He co-founded the magazine Opposition Party (《在野党》) with Zhu Yufu, Mao Qingxiang and Xu Guang and published pro-democracy material online.
Detention, trial and sentence
Human Rights in China reports that Wu traveled around China in 1998 seeking support for the CDP and was expelled from Zhejiang in early 1999. He was detained in Guangzhou in April 1999 and sent back to Hangzhou. Institutional records later place his formal arrest in September 1999.
Human Rights Watch reports that Wu, Zhu Yufu, Mao Qingxiang and Xu Guang were tried at the Hangzhou Intermediate People’s Court on October 25, 1999. The prosecution cited attempts to establish the CDP, publication of the Opposition Party magazine, online political material and links with overseas organizations. Wu received an eleven-year prison sentence. Sources differ on the exact sentencing date within the following weeks, and that conflict is preserved rather than flattened.
Imprisonment and release
Chinese Human Rights Defenders reported in January 2009 that Wu had been denied parole after refusing to admit guilt. Institutional biographical sources report that he served the full term and was released on September 14, 2010.
Later status
No verified public record of Wu’s activities or whereabouts after 2012 was located in the prepared record. His present residence, activities and status are therefore not inferred.
