2008 — detention
Chinese Human Rights Defenders reported that Xie met fellow CDP member Yue Tianxiang on June 10, 2008 and was placed under tighter monitoring. CHRD records criminal detention in late June and a home search in which CDP materials were confiscated. CHRD report.
The World Organisation Against Torture issued an urgent intervention in July 2008 concerning Xie’s detention and safety. OMCT.
2009 — trial and sentence
Xie was tried on April 28, 2009 and sentenced on September 1 by the Changsha Municipal Intermediate Court to thirteen years in prison for subversion of state power plus five years’ deprivation of political rights. The Guardian reported the sentence contemporaneously. Archived report.

2012–2019 — prison conditions and sentence status
CHRD reporting described forced labor, restrictions on reading materials and family correspondence, solitary confinement and denied family visits. These accounts remain source-attributed and were not independently witnessed.
Dui Hua reported in March 2019 that Xie was still serving the thirteen-year term in Chishan Prison, had received no sentence reduction, and was expected to complete the term in June 2021. Dui Hua Digest.
