Xiong Fenglian (熊凤莲) — Political Prisoner Profile

Xiong Fenglian (熊凤莲) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Hubei province. Born in June 1954, she is a native of Wuhan and lived for many years on Huanhu Road in the Xisaishan District of Huangshi. She began practicing Falun Gong in 1997.

Xiong was repeatedly detained by local police after 1999 in connection with her religious practice, according to Minghui, a Falun Gong-affiliated information source that documents persecution cases. On June 4, 2003, police from the Chengyue police station took her from her home; she was held for 18 days in the Huangshi No. 2 Detention Center and then sent to the Shayang reeducation-through-labor facility in Hubei, where she was held for about a year. On January 10, 2009, she was detained while posting Falun Gong-related materials; on June 3, 2009, the Xisaishan District Court sentenced her to three years’ imprisonment, Minghui reports, adding that neither Xiong nor her family was permitted to present a defense. On April 9, 2014, police took her toward a provincial reeducation center; she escaped on the way and her whereabouts were unknown.

On May 13, 2024, Xiong was detained at home by police from the Baofeng Road police station in Wuhan. Because she lived alone, her family learned of the detention only days later, when the station called; officers said surveillance footage had shown her distributing Falun Gong materials at a market, according to the China Human Rights Defenders political-prisoner database record. She was criminally detained, arrested, and prosecuted, and was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. She is held in the Hubei Provincial Women’s Prison, with her term recorded as ending on May 12, 2027. In August 2025, Minghui reported she had been taken to the women’s prison in Wuhan following the sentence.

She remains listed as in custody in the August 2026 Weiquanwang (维权网) monthly political-prisoner report, in the three-year-sentence group.
