Yao Fuxin / 姚福信

Classification: democracy and labor-rights activist

Geography: Liaoyang, Liaoning, mainland China

Profile

Yao Fuxin / 姚福信 is a Chinese labor and democracy activist whose documented public activity spans the late 1990s and the major 2002 Liaoyang labor protests. Free China Movement research separately preserves his reported participation in the 1998–99 relay hunger-strike campaign and his later labor organizing rather than treating prosecution allegations as proof of formal China Democracy Party membership.

Liaoyang labor protests and imprisonment

Independent reporting and human-rights documentation place Yao among the principal figures in the 2002 Liaoyang worker protests. He was detained in March 2002. On May 9, 2003, he received a seven-year prison sentence for subversion; the appeal was reported upheld in June 2003.

Release

Independent reporting records Yao’s release on March 16, 2009. Free China Movement does not reconstruct custody or release dates from sentence arithmetic where direct evidence is unavailable.

Evidence base

The current source baseline includes reporting and documentation from The Washington Post, South China Morning Post, Amnesty International, the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China, the International Trade Union Confederation, and a Human Rights Watch-hosted reproduction of the indictment. Primary acquisition targets remain the original judgment and appeal, prison and release certificates, original labor-union organizing records, and the original 1998–99 hunger-strike roster.
