Yu Bo (于波) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Lutai Town, Ninghe District, in the northern Chinese city of Tianjin. She is married to Li Guoqing and is the mother of their daughter, Li Lei. In September 2021, a court in Ninghe District sentenced her to ten years in prison in a case that also sent her husband and daughter to prison. She remains in custody.
The case. On the afternoon of May 15, 2019, police from the Ninghe District branch of the Tianjin public security bureau detained Yu Bo, her husband, and her daughter as they were driving out, according to a report by the Chinese-language monitoring network Weiquanwang. Officers from the district police and the Lutai Town station then searched the family home, seizing printers, fax machines, religious materials, and three of the family’s cars. The three were placed under criminal detention on suspicion of cult-related offenses and held at the Ninghe District Detention Center; the case was transferred to the Ninghe District Court in March 2020.
Sentencing. On September 4, 2021, after more than two years in detention, the Ninghe District Court tried and sentenced all three in a single hearing, according to Weiquanwang and the prisoner-of-conscience database maintained by Chinese Human Rights Defenders. Li Guoqing received twelve years, Yu Bo received ten years, and Li Lei received seven years, all for “using a cult to undermine law enforcement” (利用邪教组织破坏法律实施罪). Yu Bo’s term runs to May 14, 2029. No official court document for this case is publicly available; the account of the proceedings comes from the monitoring organizations’ reporting.
