Who she is
Zhang Fenglian (张凤莲) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Hanzhong City in Shaanxi Province. She is reported to be in her seventies. According to Minghui’s reporting, she lived with and cared for her husband, who is blind.
Detention and sentencing
On October 22, 2023, state-security officers from the Nanzheng district public security bureau detained Zhang Fenglian at her home, along with several other Falun Gong practitioners who were visiting. She was placed under criminal detention at the Hantai District Detention Center on suspicion of “using a cult to undermine law enforcement” (利用邪教组织破坏法律实施罪), was formally arrested in December 2023, and was later sentenced to four years in prison. In February 2025 she was transferred to the Shaanxi Provincial Women’s Prison to serve her sentence, with a reported release date of October 22, 2027.
