Zhang Li (张莉), born in March 1960, is a resident of Donghu District, Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, and a Falun Gong practitioner. Before her detention she served as a chief clerk and cashier (主任科员兼出纳) with the Jiangxi provincial committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang (中国国民党革命委员会), one of China’s eight minor political parties.
According to the CHRD Prisoners of Conscience database and contemporaneous Minghui reporting, Zhang was detained on July 18, 2019, when police in Nanchang formed a special task force targeting local Falun Gong practitioners, locating them through surveillance cameras. She was tried by the Xihu District Court on July 7, 2020, in a video-conference hearing that her family members were not informed of, and on October 22, 2020, the court sentenced her to seven years and six months in prison with a fine of 100,000 yuan. The reported release date is January 17, 2027. The charge of conviction and the place of detention have not been publicly reported.
Minghui’s reporting states that Zhang had been detained more than ten times over the preceding two decades and had served two earlier prison terms — three years imposed in 2001 and four years imposed in 2005, both by the Xihu District Court and both served in the Jiangxi Province Women’s Prison — and that she was dismissed from her public post. These earlier-detention claims come from a Falun Gong–affiliated source and have not been independently verified.
Name note
Several people share the romanized name Zhang Li. This profile concerns only the Nanchang resident born in March 1960 described above. It does not concern Zhang Li (张丽), a Guangzhou accountant sentenced to five years and six months whose profile is published separately, nor other same-name individuals.
