Zhang Peng (张鹏) — Beijing Filmmaker Detained Without Trial

Zhang Peng (张鹏), known online as Zhang Neixian (张内咸), is a Beijing-based independent filmmaker and satirical talk-show host who was criminally detained in July 2026 on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” He remains listed as detained without trial in the Rights Defense Network’s August 31, 2026 monthly report on political and conscience prisoners.

Born October 12, 1986, in Beijing, Zhang graduated from the Communication University of China in 2010. His independent films include The Unemployed Youth (《待业青年》, 2009), Strawberry 100% (《草莓百分百》), and Those Absurd Days (《那些五脊六兽的日子》, 2013). In January 2025 he began a YouTube talk show, “張内咸脫口秀” (Zhang Neixian Talk Show), mixing entertainment with political satire; the channel reached about 49,000 subscribers and 5.7 million views by July 2026.

On July 1, 2026, at about 11 p.m., police entered his Beijing home and took him away. A detention notice provided by his family states that Zhang Peng was placed in criminal detention at 8 p.m. on July 2, 2026, on suspicion of 寻衅滋事 (picking quarrels and provoking trouble), and was held at the Haidian District Detention Center. His family disclosed the detention on July 9, after his regularly scheduled July 4 program failed to appear. His Weibo and Bilibili accounts were closed around the same time; the platform’s official notice said the accounts had repeatedly carried political speech in violation of its rules.
