Zhang Wanbo (张万波)

Zhang Wanbo, born in 1968, is a former teacher from Hailar District in Hulunbuir, Inner Mongolia, and a practitioner of Falun Gong since 1997.

Earlier persecution

According to the Minghui documentation archive, Zhang began practicing Falun Gong in 1997. In December 1999 she was detained for half a month; in 2000 she was sent to a brainwashing class. On December 10, 2009, she was arrested along with other teacher-practitioners in Hulunbuir, and her home was raided. In May 2012 she was again taken to a brainwashing class. On July 8, 2017, she was arrested while distributing Falun Gong materials and her home was searched. On May 29, 2018, she stood trial with four other practitioners at the Hailar District Court; on January 29, 2019, she was sentenced to three years in prison suspended for four years, with a 5,000-yuan fine. The intermediate court upheld the verdict on appeal.

2024 arrest and current sentence

In May 2024 Zhang was arrested again in Hailar. (The Chinese Human Rights Defenders database records the arrest on May 11, 2024; the Minghui archive reports her abduction on May 22, 2024, followed by a 14-day administrative detention that was converted to criminal detention.) She was sentenced to three years in prison; neither source states the charge or the sentencing court. Her term runs through May 10, 2027. On March 22, 2025, she was transferred to the Hohhot No.1 Prison in Inner Mongolia, where she is serving her sentence.

Status

Zhang Wanbo is currently imprisoned. Her three-year sentence runs through May 10, 2027, and the Rights Defense Network’s monthly prisoner roster (Issue 131, dated August 31, 2026) lists her as in custody.

Zhang Wanbo should not be confused with Zhang Bo (张波), a Chongqing murder convict in an unrelated criminal case, or with Zhang Tingxiang (张廷祥) or Wei Shaomin (魏少敏).
