2021 — ChinaAid: four church leaders heavily sentenced
On August 14, 2021, the ChinaAid Chinese-language news site reported that four leaders of the Kaili Seventh-day Adventist meeting point had been heavily sentenced on fraud charges and that the case was under appeal at the Qiandongnan Intermediate Court. The report states that the more-than-two-decade-old congregation had repeatedly applied to the religious-affairs bureau for legal status without success; in July 2020 the Qiandongnan public security bureau formed a task force, investigated the meeting point, and detained four leaders, treating congregants’ offerings as fraud proceeds because the meeting point lacked state approval. The Kaili City Court sentenced Zhang Wenying to 12 years, Jiang Kui to 6 years, Xie Zhiqun to 5 years and He Se-qin to 3 years, and seized over 1.4 million yuan in offerings. The report includes video testimony from elderly congregants (Wan Shuping, Tang Yongfang, He Lianzhu, Xu Qiongzhen) stating that all offerings were voluntary and that Zhang Wenying never pressured anyone to give. — link

- The fraud charges are the charges brought by the authorities; the monitoring organizations reporting the case characterize it as targeting unregistered religious activity. Both framings are attributed in the profile above.
- An official judicial notice with redacted names, reproduced in the CPPC record’s images, corroborates the arrest-approval stage; no official source naming Zhang Wenying directly has been located.
