Zhang Xiaodong (张晓东)

Who he is

Zhang Xiaodong (张晓东) is a retired railway-sector worker from Nanchang, in Jiangxi Province, who was sentenced to four years in prison in 2024 in a speech-related case. Online he was known by the nickname “从善如流的战士” (roughly, “the warrior who follows good advice”). Friends describe him as generous and outspoken, someone who for years went out of his way to help local citizens and lawyers when they ran into trouble with the authorities.

According to the Rights Defense Network (维权网), an independent Chinese-language monitoring group, Zhang was born in 1960 or 1961 — its own reports give both years, and the discrepancy is unresolved. He had taken leave without pay from the railway system years earlier, spent years in business, and was retired by the time of his detention.

Detention and prosecution

On the afternoon of November 15, 2022, three uniformed police officers came to Zhang’s home in Nanchang, handcuffed him behind his back, and took him away, carrying a summons notice. When a neighbor asked what was happening, Zhang held up his cuffed arms and answered: “a political matter.” He was taken on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking troubles” (寻衅滋事罪) and placed under criminal detention at the Nanchang No. 1 Detention Center, by officers of the Xihu district branch.

The Rights Defense Network reported that Zhang was a friend of four Jiujiang citizens — Chen Gong’an, Wang Lin’an, Li Yurong, and Ke Youbin — who had been detained in early September 2022 on the same charge, and that his detention may have been connected to his concern for them. His WeChat account had been blocked multiple times before his arrest. On December 23, 2022, the procuratorate formally approved his arrest.

In February 2023 his case was transferred to the Qingshanhu District Procuratorate in Nanchang for prosecution. The indictment, as described by the Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) prisoners-of-conscience database, relied entirely on Zhang’s own statements in WeChat groups, Moments posts, and QQ groups — a prosecution based on speech.

Trial and sentence

On March 19, 2024, the Qingshanhu District Court tried Zhang’s case; no verdict was announced that day. On May 10, 2024, he was sentenced to four years in prison, and he appealed in court. In August 2024, according to the Rights Defense Network, he was transferred to Ganjiang Prison in Jiangxi. His wife was permitted a visit and found him very thin, with worsening blurred vision.

The Rights Defense Network’s monthly custody report dated August 31, 2026 lists Zhang Xiaodong among prisoners reported as serving four-year sentences and currently in custody. No independently verified information about his present condition is available beyond these dated reports.
