Zhang Xudong / 张旭东 — Media Profile & Archive

This archive preserves the principal source record used for the canonical Zhang Xudong profile and separates stronger disposition evidence from later derivative prisoner-list material.

Core legal and labor-movement record

International Labour Organization, Committee on Freedom of Association, 279th Report (1990). The report reproduces the PRC government’s October 11, 1990 response concerning Changsha labor activists. Zhang Xudong is named in the Changsha group and reported as receiving four years’ imprisonment for “disturbing the peace.” This is currently the strongest located source chain for the sentence and disposition, although the original judgment has not been recovered.

Asia Watch labor-crackdown reporting (1992). Asia Watch likewise reported a four-year term for Zhang. Its account reflects the same government/ILO evidence channel and is therefore supporting transmission, not an independent second investigation.

Prisoner-list record

Chinese Human Rights Defenders, The Legacy of Tiananmen (2009), and related HRIC-derived Hunan lists. This documentation records Zhang as a Changsha figure and reports a five-year sentence with Chishan Penitentiary placement. The five-year figure conflicts with the government/ILO account. The four-year figure is currently the stronger account because it is tied to the PRC government’s case-specific response, but the conflict should remain visible until the judgment is located.

Movement-history record

Later Changsha movement histories describe Zhang as a co-founder of the Changsha Workers’ Autonomous Federation, a participant in the May 12 dialogue, and a front-line participant in the June 1 strike march. These details are useful for reconstructing his role but remain secondary and should be attributed. A later “commander-in-chief” label is not supported by the evidence reviewed and should not be used.

Open record gaps

The original judgment, exact release date, post-release history, and present status have not been located. No custody or release chronology should be inferred from sentence arithmetic.
