This archive collects the media record of the case of Zhang Yutang (张玉堂), a Falun Gong practitioner and carpenter from Tiexi Village, Mishan City, Heilongjiang Province. Arrested on April 21, 2023, while visiting his daughter, he was tried by the Mishan City Court on October 12, 2023, and convicted on October 18, 2023, receiving a four-year prison sentence with a 10,000-yuan fine. He had previously served two years of forced labor (1999), three years in prison (2003), five months (2012), and five and a half years (2014–2019) for his faith. The Rights Defense Network lists him as a current in-custody political prisoner (Issue 131, August 31, 2026) in its four-year sentence group. His case is documented by two Minghui.org reports (July 2021 and November 2023) and by the Rights Defense Network’s Issue 131 roster in both Chinese and English editions.

Source provenance

Minghui.org is a Falun Gong community publication that reports detentions and prosecutions of practitioners. It is a partisan source: its articles present detentions as persecution and reflect the Falun Gong community’s perspective. The case facts below should be read as reported by that publication, not as independently verified findings.

The Rights Defense Network (维权网) monthly report is a systematic roster published monthly; Issue 131 (August 31, 2026) lists 1,638 reported current-custody political prisoners and prisoners of conscience grouped by sentence length. It corroborates the four-year sentence independently of Minghui.

Chronological media record

1999–2019 — earlier persecution. Minghui reports that Mr. Zhang began practicing Falun Gong in September 1998. After the persecution began, he was given two years of forced labor in December 1999, sentenced to three years in prison in April 2002, and sent to a brainwashing center on August 12, 2011, for requesting the release of his nephew’s wife. Arrested in April 2014, he was sentenced to five and a half years on February 13, 2015, after six hearings; he served in Mudanjiang, Tailai, and Qiqihar prisons and was released on October 1, 2019. Local authorities then installed surveillance cameras around his apartment and repeatedly harassed him through 2020–2021.

April 21, 2023 — arrest. Mr. Zhang went to visit his daughter in the afternoon and was arrested by Mishan City Domestic Security Office officers as soon as he left her home close to 6 p.m. Police searched his home for nearly an hour, confiscating Falun Gong books, loudspeakers, envelopes, flash drives, and personal belongings. He was placed under criminal detention the next day at the Mishan City Detention Center and indicted by the Mishan City Procuratorate.

October 12, 2023 — trial. The Mishan City Court held a hearing with Judge Ling Zuobin presiding. The prosecution’s evidence was surveillance videos allegedly showing Mr. Zhang mailing Falun Gong-information letters at three local post offices; his lawyer argued the videos were inadmissible for lack of concrete identification.

October 18, 2023 — sentencing. Judge Ling convicted Mr. Zhang, sentencing him to four years in prison with a 10,000-yuan fine. The report does not state when he was transferred to prison.

August 31, 2026 — roster classification. The Rights Defense Network’s Issue 131 monthly report lists 张玉堂 in its 判刑4年,171人 (sentenced to 4 years, 171 people) group; the English edition confirms “Zhang Yutang” in the parallel band.
