Who is Zhang Yuxiang?
Zhang Yuxiang (张玉香) is a farmer and Falun Gong practitioner from Nan Shaozhuang village, Liangtang town, Guanxian county, Liaocheng city, Shandong province. Born on June 6, 1972, she was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison in January 2023 alongside seven other Falun Gong practitioners tried together at the Guanxian County Court.
Arrest and trial
On the afternoon of August 18, 2022, Zhang was taken from her home by police from the Guanxian Public Security Bureau, according to the Chinese Human Rights Defenders prisoner database and the Minghui victim case archive. Officers searched her home and seized her computer, printer, Falun Gong books and materials, and 20,000 yuan in cash — described as her only savings. She was formally arrested on September 13, 2022.
On December 21, 2022, the Guanxian Court held a video trial of eight practitioners, including Zhang, Xu Hengkui, Zhang Bingliang, Kong Dequan, Gao Shuzhen, Zhou Chunbao, Wang Ruixiang, and Han Zhenlin. On January 4, 2023, the court sentenced Zhang to seven years and six months in prison with an 18,000-yuan fine. (The Minghui archive attributes the verdict to promoting Falun Gong and producing informational materials; the CHRD record lists the charge as unspecified.) The practitioners appealed; in April 2023 the Liaocheng Intermediate Court remanded the case for retrial, and in March 2024 it issued its final ruling upholding the seven-and-a-half-year sentence for seven of the eight, according to the Minghui archive.
Where she is now
Zhang is held in the Liaocheng City Detention Center, according to her case records (last reported May 2024). Her sentence runs to 2030.
