Zhao Xijuan (赵西娟)
Ms. Zhao Xijuan (赵西娟), born October 16, 1980, is a Falun Gong practitioner from Wugong County, Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, sentenced to seven years in prison in December 2021 alongside her husband, Wang Pingchuang. The 2020–2021 case
Zhao and her husband, Wang Pingchuang (born April 8, 1975), are from Yilao Village, Puji Town, Wugong County, and had been running a business in Xi’an. Case records compiled by the Prisoners of Conscience Data project (CHRD) describe both as Falun Gong practitioners. Wang had previously been subjected to two terms of re-education through labor; the same records report that he had been tortured during those detentions.
On May 25, 2020, Zhao and Wang posted stickers reading “Falun Dafa is good” at bus stops. On June 5, 2020, officers from the Zhouzhi County Public Security Bureau and the Chang’an District Guodu Town police station detained the couple and searched their rental home, seizing Falun Gong materials, computers, printers, and other property. The couple was held at the Xi’an detention center (Sanyao detention center). On June 24, 2020, the Chang’an District procuratorate approved their arrest; the Yanta District procuratorate filed the case for prosecution in October 2020, and the Yanta District Court tried the case on December 4, 2020.
On December 16, 2021, the Yanta District Court sentenced Wang Pingchuang to nine years in prison and Zhao Xijuan to seven years, with a combined fine of 50,000 yuan.
