Case chronology
2019–2022 — First sentence. On November 15, 2019, Zhao was seized at her workplace by Shunyi district’s Liqiao police station and taken to the Shunyi detention center. On September 16, 2020, the Shunyi District Court sentenced her to three years’ imprisonment with a 3,000-yuan fine, without permitting family members to attend the hearing. An international monitoring organization issued a notice in February 2021 documenting the case and naming the officials involved. She served the full term, ending November 14, 2022.
October 12, 2023 — Re-arrest. Zhao was captured on surveillance cameras while distributing Falun Gong materials in a residential compound and was detained by the Hujialou police station in Beijing’s Chaoyang district. Her home was searched. No further word reached her family for a period after her detention.
2023–2026 — Second sentence. The Shunyi District Court sentenced Zhao to three years’ imprisonment — the charge was not documented — and she was transferred to the Beijing Women’s Prison to serve it, with the term ending October 11, 2026.
