Peng Shi / 彭实
Classification: 1989 Hunan worker protest participant; current status unknown.
Peng Shi was a worker at the Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory in Hunan. Contemporary human-rights documentation places him in the group prosecuted after factory workers protested the June 3–4, 1989 military crackdown in Beijing.
1989 Xiangtan case
Human Rights in China records Peng Shi as participating in the incident involving the home of the factory public-security-section head after workers sought an explanation for violence against a protester. The authorities prosecuted him for hooliganism.
Sentence and imprisonment
The Xiangtan City Intermediate People’s Court sentenced Peng Shi to life imprisonment in August 1989. He was sent to Longxi Prison with Chen Gang. The Dui Hua Foundation later confirmed that Peng Shi was one of the factory workers given a life sentence and reported that the sentences were reduced over the years.
Release/current status: No reliable release record has been located for Peng Shi. Sentence reduction is not equivalent to verified release. His current status is therefore recorded as unknown.
Related people
Chen Gang, Liu Jian and Liu Zhihua were workers linked to the same Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory prosecution. Chen Ding, Chen Gang’s younger brother, was sentenced separately and is not treated as a co-defendant in this workers’ trial.
Sources and evidence status
The charge, court, life sentence and Longxi Prison placement are supported by Human Rights in China’s Hunan documentation; Dui Hua independently corroborates the life sentence and later reductions. Release and post-release whereabouts remain unresolved and are not inferred.
