Liu Jian / 刘建 — Xiangtan Factory Worker Sentenced to Life in 1989

Liu Jian / 刘建

Classification: 1989 Hunan worker protest participant; current status unknown.

Liu Jian was a worker at the Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory in Hunan and was about 26 years old in 1989. Human-rights reporting places him among four factory workers punished after protests connected to the June 1989 Beijing crackdown.

Case and sentence

The Dui Hua Foundation identifies Liu Jian as one of the Xiangtan workers convicted on the now-abolished charge of hooliganism. He received a life sentence. Dui Hua reported that the sentences imposed on the group were reduced over the years.

Court/prison: Available evidence does not establish Liu Jian’s individual court or prison with sufficient confidence, so those details are not inferred from his co-defendants.

Release/current status: No reliable release record has been located. A reduced sentence or nominal sentence trajectory is not evidence of release. Current status remains unknown.

Related people

Chen Gang, Peng Shi and Liu Zhihua were fellow Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory workers linked to the same 1989 incident. Chen Ding was sentenced separately and should not be merged into the workers’ hooliganism trial.

Evidence status

Liu Jian’s factory-worker identity is attested in Human Rights in China’s Hunan documentation and Dui Hua confirms his inclusion among the four workers, the hooliganism charge and life sentence. Release, later residence, occupation and affiliations remain unresolved.
