Chen Ding / 陈定 — Changsha Railway Academy Student Sentenced in 1989

Chen Ding / 陈定

Classification: 1989 Hunan student protest participant; historical imprisonment documented.

Chen Ding was a student at the Changsha Railway Academy and the younger brother of Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory worker Chen Gang. Human Rights in China’s contemporary Hunan reporting documents Chen Ding as having been sentenced before Chen Gang’s arrest.

1989 case

According to Human Rights in China, Chen Ding was sentenced to one year for counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement after exhorting workers to strike. Chen Gang was subsequently arrested while calling for justice for his younger brother.

A later secondary account compresses Chen Ding into the Xiangtan workers’ hooliganism case. The more detailed contemporary account instead describes a separate proceeding. FreeChina therefore does not classify Chen Ding as a co-defendant in the hooliganism trial.

Status

The one-year term is documented, but a specific release record has not been located. The nominal expiry of a sentence is not presented as a verified release date. Later whereabouts are unknown.

Related people

Chen Gang was Chen Ding’s older brother. Chen Gang, Peng Shi, Liu Jian and Liu Zhihua were workers connected to the separate Xiangtan Electrical Machinery Factory prosecution.

Evidence status

The principal source is Human Rights in China’s contemporary Hunan documentation. The later hooliganism characterization conflicts with that detailed account and is therefore retained only as a source conflict, not adopted as Chen Ding’s charge.
