Media Profile & Archive
This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Liu Jianwei / 刘建伟, a worker in the Vehicle Section of the Passenger Transport Department of the Changsha Railway Bureau and a participant in the Changsha Workers’ Autonomous Federation during the 1989 democracy movement.
Documented record
Asia Watch reported that Liu was 30 years old and participated in the Changsha Workers’ Autonomous Federation. Its 1992 report states that in mid-June 1989 he helped several leaders of the provincial Students’ Autonomous Federation leave Changsha by train.
Asia Watch reported that Liu was arrested in September 1989 and that in early 1990 the Changsha Railway Public Security Bureau imposed three years of re-education through labor. This was administrative detention rather than a criminal court sentence. The report placed him at the Changsha Xinkaipu Labor Re-education Center.
Identity and evidence limits
Current status: unknown. No reliable release record or post-detention biography has been established in the evidence reviewed here. A nominal three-year term must not be converted into an inferred release date.
This Liu Jianwei should not be merged with other people named Liu Wei in Hunan 1989 records. The identity anchor is the Changsha Railway Bureau worker, age 30, linked to the Workers’ Autonomous Federation and the June 1989 railway assistance to student leaders.
