Chen Tianlai / 陈天来 — Media Profile & Archive

Media Profile & Archive

This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Chen Tianlai / 陈天来, a Dong’an County resident documented in Asia Watch’s reporting on repression following the 1989 democracy movement in Hunan.

Documented record

Asia Watch’s 1992 Anthems of Defeat identifies Chen as a 24-year-old unemployed high-school graduate. The report says authorities accused him of entering student ranks, taking to the streets to “create disturbances,” and spreading “rumors” and “superstitions.” These are authorities’ characterizations quoted by the human-rights report, not independently established findings.

According to Asia Watch, Chen was arrested and in November 1989 the Lingling Prefecture Public Security Bureau imposed three years of re-education through labor. This was administrative detention rather than a criminal-court sentence; the source identifies no criminal judgment.

Evidence limits

Current status: unknown. The available source does not establish a release date, post-custody activity, later residence, or present status. A nominal three-year term should not be treated as proof of actual release. The Chinese characters 陈天来 are reported in the research extraction from the report’s glossary and should be checked against a primary Chinese record if one becomes available.
