This archive accompanies the canonical profile of Xiao Huidu / 肖会度(萧会度), a teacher in Huaihua, Hunan, whose detention after the 1989 Democracy Movement was documented by Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch.
Documented record
Human Rights Watch/Asia Watch reported in Anthems of Defeat: Crackdown in Hunan Province, 1989–92 that Xiao taught at Huaihua County No. 1 Middle School, was arrested in October 1989, and in early 1990 was sent by the Huaihua City Public Security Bureau to two years of reeducation through labor. The report attributes to authorities allegations that he had contacts with outside students, helped students “make chaos,” and wrote “reactionary slogans”; these are reported official characterizations, not findings from a criminal judgment.
Chinese Human Rights Defenders’ The Legacy of Tiananmen later listed a Xiao Huidu from Huaihua with a two-year detention term. A 2013 Hunan prisoner compilation provides a further secondary reference, but is not treated as independent corroboration where its information may share an interview lineage with the CHRD material.
Name and identity caution
The Chinese-character form remains unresolved. CHRD renders the name 肖会度, while the 2013 compilation renders it 萧会度; the English-language Human Rights Watch report gives “Xiao Huidu.” The Huaihua location, teaching occupation, 1989 activity and two-year administrative term strongly support a single person, but the surname character should remain qualified until a primary Chinese document is located.
A separate same-name record described as a Shaoyang Workers’ Autonomous Federation organizer should not be merged with this Huaihua teacher without stronger identity evidence.
Status caution
No reliable post-detention trace has been established in the reviewed sources. The nominal two-year term is not evidence of an actual release date. Current status therefore remains unknown.
