Current detention chronology
- August 5, 2026: detained while traveling in Gansu Province and given 12 days of administrative detention, according to Weiquanwang.
- August 17: transferred to Chengdu police when the administrative detention period ended and subsequently criminally detained.
- September 23: relatives were told that Chengdu Wenjiang District authorities had formally arrested him. At the time of reporting, the family had not received the written arrest notice.
Prior imprisonment
Weiquanwang reports that Chen was detained in March 2015 after participating in a memorial visit for victims of the 1989 crackdown, formally arrested the following month, and sentenced in 2017 to four years in prison. He was released in March 2019. He was again detained in March 2021 and later sentenced to another four-year term, ending in March 2025.
Background
Chen participated in the 1989 democracy movement and subsequently engaged in rights-defense activity. He is also reported as a member of Chengdu’s Early Rain Covenant Church.
