Background

Yu Shenghua was born in 1969 and lives in Dazhu County, Dazhou City. According to the Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) Prisoners of Conscience database and Minghui.org’s case library, she is a Falun Gong practitioner. Minghui’s library records earlier detentions: in January 2019 she was held for five days after being reported while speaking with people about Falun Gong, and in December 2020 she was detained with two other practitioners and released the same day. In November 2020, she was subjected to community surveillance and harassment ahead of a local court hearing. (These accounts come from practitioner-run outlets and have not been independently verified.)

The 2024 case

On the evening of October 13, 2024, Yu Shenghua and fellow practitioner She Xingmin were speaking with people about Falun Gong at Huangge Plaza in Dazhu County when they were taken by patrol police from the Dazhu County Public Security Bureau. Both women were placed under criminal detention and held at the Dazhou City Detention Center.

On May 15, 2025, Yu Shenghua was tried at the Dazhou City Court together with three other practitioners — Peng Zuyin, She Xingmin, and Luo Fuqiong. All four were sentenced: Peng Zuyin to four years, Yu Shenghua to two years and six months with a 5,000-yuan fine, She Xingmin to two years and three months, and Luo Fuqiong to two years. No charges were publicly reported.

According to Minghui.org’s case library, Yu Shenghua, Peng Zuyin, and She Xingmin were transferred to Chengdu Prison on August 27, 2025. (This transfer report comes from a practitioner-run outlet and has not been independently verified.)
