- April 1996 — Zhao Huanzhen began practicing Falun Gong.
- May 10, 2023 — Zhao was detained with several elderly practitioners at the home of Zhu Fengchun (aged 79) in Shanhaiguan while they were reading Falun Gong books together. Some 40–50 officers from the Qinhuangdao PSB, its Shanhaiguan branch, and the Shanhaiguan police station took part. He was taken to the Qinhuangdao Detention Center.
- Late 2023 — After about six months in detention, Zhao developed severe bloody stool and became weak.
- December 14, 2023 — Zhao was tried at the Funing District Court, Qinhuangdao.
- Days after trial — Family was informed by court personnel that Zhao had been sentenced to four years and six months. He appealed. Sentence ends November 9, 2027.
