Lee Cheuk-yan (李卓人) is a Hong Kong labor leader, former legislator, democracy advocate and former leader of the now-dissolved Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China. Public role and June Fourth remembrance
Lee was a leading figure in Hong Kong’s independent labor movement and served as an elected legislator for more than two decades. Associated Press reports that he carried donations to Beijing during the 1989 democracy protests and was later detained by mainland Chinese authorities. He subsequently became one of Hong Kong’s best-known public advocates for preserving the memory of June Fourth.
Hong Kong Alliance case
The Hong Kong Alliance organized the city’s annual June Fourth candlelight vigil for decades. Lee and Chow Hang-tung were convicted on 21 August 2026 of “inciting subversion” under Hong Kong’s National Security Law. On 11 September 2026, Lee was sentenced to 7 years’ imprisonment. Reuters reported that the court treated the Alliance’s call to “end one-party dictatorship” as part of the evidence supporting the prosecution. Lee pleaded not guilty and has indicated an intention to appeal.
