Rapid Response: Keep the Promise — Restore Hong Kong’s Freedoms and Free Jimmy Lai

Free China Movement Rapid Response — September 14, 2026

Xi Jinping’s anticipated September 24 Washington meeting should put Hong Kong’s promised freedoms on the agenda. Beijing cannot ask the world to trust new agreements while dismissing commitments already made to Hong Kong.

We call for the restoration of Hong Kong’s protected freedoms, the release of Jimmy Lai and others imprisoned solely for peaceful exercise of internationally recognized rights, protection of judicial independence, and an end to politically motivated repression.

The consequences we advocate are peaceful and lawful: sustained diplomatic scrutiny, targeted accountability where legally justified, support for independent media and civil society, and policies that make clear that breaking international commitments has reputational and political costs.

Keep the promise. Restore Hong Kong’s freedoms. Free Jimmy Lai.
