Chen Yunfei 陈云飞 — 1989 Participant and Rights Activist Profile

Chen Yunfei (陈云飞), born August 13, 1967, is reported by Weiquanwang and ChinaAid to have participated in the 1989 democracy movement and later remained active in rights-defense work in mainland China.

1989 and subsequent activism

According to Weiquanwang, Chen participated in the 1989 movement and continued advocacy after returning to Sichuan. His later activities included assisting petitioners, public commemoration of victims of the June Fourth crackdown, and other rights-defense actions.

June Fourth remembrance and prosecution

In March 2015, Chen joined more than twenty other citizens in visiting graves connected to victims of the 1989 crackdown. He was detained afterward, formally arrested in April 2015, and eventually sentenced to four years in prison. He was released in March 2019.

He was again detained in March 2021 and later sentenced to another four-year term, ending in March 2025, according to Weiquanwang.

2026 detention

On August 5, 2026, Chen was detained while traveling in Gansu Province. After 12 days of administrative detention, he was transferred to Chengdu authorities. Rights groups reported on September 23 that relatives had been told he was formally arrested by Wenjiang District authorities on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble.” The family had not yet received the written arrest notice when those reports were published.
