Chen Qiushi / 陈秋实 — Wuhan Citizen Journalism and Information-Control Case

Canonical P1 person/case profile • Citizen journalism

Chen Qiushi (陈秋实) is a citizen journalist who traveled to Wuhan in January 2020 and published independent video reporting about conditions during the early COVID-19 outbreak.

Wuhan reporting and disappearance

CPJ reported that Chen traveled to Wuhan on January 24, 2020 and published videos from hospitals and other locations. He disappeared on February 6 after telling contacts he planned to report on a temporary hospital. Human Rights Watch later reported that he had been released to his parents’ home and placed under close surveillance.

Information-control significance

Chen’s case illustrates how independent reporting may be constrained through person-level measures in addition to platform deletion or network filtering. Contemporary reporting described “forced quarantine” or close surveillance; exact legal status should be described source by source.
