Li Zehua / 李泽华 — Wuhan Livestreaming, Disappearance and Supervised-Quarantine Case

Canonical P1 person/case profile • Citizen journalism

Li Zehua (李泽华) is a freelance journalist who traveled to Wuhan in February 2020 to report independently on the COVID-19 outbreak after Chen Qiushi disappeared.

Reporting and disappearance

CPJ reported that Li posted videos about local outbreak conditions and on February 26 livestreamed while saying security agents were pursuing him. The stream ended after unidentified people entered his temporary apartment, and he then disappeared from public view.

Reappearance

CPJ later reported that Li reappeared roughly two months later and said he had been placed in “supervised quarantine” in Wuhan and then in his hometown.

Information-control significance

The case is useful for distinguishing content removal from person-level restrictions. His videos remained part of the public evidentiary record even while the reporter himself was unavailable.
