An alarming report about imprisoned pastor Wang Yi’s health cannot yet be confirmed. That uncertainty is not a reason to look away; it reflects the isolation surrounding his imprisonment.
On October 6, the U.S. Congressional-Executive Commission on China used its official Threads account to raise concern that Wang may have serious health problems and to call for access by his family and lawyer.
ChinaAid reported on September 28 that sources inside China indicated Wang may be suffering from advanced liver cancer. ChinaAid explicitly said it had not independently verified that diagnosis or his current condition because of prison restrictions and limited family access. The possible diagnosis therefore remains attributed and conditional.
An October 3 open letter from Early Rain Covenant Church drew the same boundary. The church said it could not confirm that Wang was ill or accurately determine his present health. It said visits, correspondence and calls with his wife, children and parents had been severely restricted.
Wang, founder and senior pastor of Early Rain Covenant Church in Chengdu, was detained in December 2018 and sentenced in December 2019 to nine years in prison on charges of “inciting subversion of state power” and “illegal business operations.”
The immediate test
The immediate demand is narrow and verifiable: permit prompt access by Wang’s family and a lawyer; allow an independent medical evaluation; disclose accurate examination and treatment information to his family; and ensure timely, adequate care, including medical release if clinically necessary.
No responsible report should diagnose Wang from afar. But authorities should not be allowed to use secrecy to make verification impossible and then treat the absence of verification as proof that no emergency exists.
Free China Movement assessment
Transparency is the minimum test. If Wang is not gravely ill, family access and an independent medical assessment can establish that. If he is ill, delay compounds the risk and the state’s responsibility.
Update, October 13, 2026
Since this report was published, a new institutional voice has joined the calls for Wang Yi’s release. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), a United Kingdom-based religious-freedom organization, issued a press release saying it is “deeply concerned” at reports that Wang may be suffering from late-stage liver cancer, and called for his immediate release so he can receive medical treatment — with full information about his diagnosis and health condition made available to his family and church.
CSW’s founder president, Mervyn Thomas, also condemned the renewed crackdown on Early Rain Covenant Church and the wider detention of unregistered-church leaders and members for peaceful religious activity. The Christian Post reported CSW’s call on October 12, 2026.
The underlying diagnosis itself remains what it was when first reported: unconfirmed. ChinaAid, which first relayed the late-stage liver-cancer report on September 28, explicitly said it could not independently verify the diagnosis or Wang’s current condition because of prison restrictions and limited family access; Early Rain Covenant Church’s October 3 open letter likewise said the church could not confirm that Wang was ill or determine his present health. The Free China Movement’s demand stands as stated above: prompt family and lawyer access, an independent medical evaluation, and full disclosure of examination and treatment information to his family.
