Zhao Jing / 赵京 (An Ti / 安替) — Microsoft MSN Spaces Censorship Case

Canonical P1 person/case profile • Platform-hosted speech

Zhao Jing (赵京), known online as An Ti / 安替, is a Chinese blogger and journalist whose 2005 MSN Spaces case became a prominent example of a multinational platform responding to Chinese government censorship demands.

December 2005 blog removal

According to CPJ, Microsoft removed Zhao’s MSN Spaces blog on December 30, 2005 after he wrote about the removal of top editors at the Beijing News and a journalists’ protest at the paper. CPJ reported that Microsoft said Chinese authorities had informed the company that the blog violated local law.

Why the case matters

The incident illustrates an early platform-governance question that remains relevant: how a global service handles content that a government seeks to restrict within one jurisdiction. CPJ later reported that Microsoft changed its approach so that a blog disabled for users in China could remain accessible elsewhere.
