Memorial record
Liu Xiaobo (1955–2017), writer, Charter 08 co-author and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, died on July 13, 2017 in a Shenyang hospital from complications of liver cancer while serving an 11-year prison sentence and remaining under state guard after transfer from prison for medical treatment.
Evidence boundary
This archive classifies the case as Died in custody. Human-rights organizations documented restrictions concerning treatment choices and overseas medical care. Those restrictions are source-attributed here; the current evidence register does not make the stronger causal finding required to classify the death as caused by denial of medical care.
