Cheng Lianlian (程连连)

Cheng Lianlian (程连连), a former police officer from Hongan County, Hubei Province, is serving an 8-year sentence for her practice of Falun Gong. She was detained on August 21, 2021 in Baliwan Town, Hongan County, while distributing Falun Gong materials; her case passed through the Hongan County Procuratorate and the Macheng City Court before the Huanggang City Intermediate Court handed down the 8-year sentence with a 10,000-yuan fine. She has been held at the Huanggang City Women’s Detention Center and has been denied family visits since her arrest.

Cheng, about 51 at the time of her sentencing reports, had formerly served as a police officer at the Xiangyang base of the Dongfeng Motor Company. According to Minghui.org, a Falun Gong documentation site, she and her husband — reported by Minghui as Wang Yu and by the World Organization to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong as 王珏 — were repeatedly targeted for their shared faith: Cheng lost her police job, the couple moved from place to place to avoid detention and did odd jobs to live, and their 11-year-old son died in a car accident around 2010. The loss, on top of the ongoing pressure, drove her husband to a mental breakdown, and he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital in July 2015; both sets of parents were also implicated and their homes raided multiple times.

On August 21, 2021, Cheng and fellow practitioner Zhang Guiying were reported and detained after handing out flyers about Falun Gong; police searched both women’s homes the next day, confiscating Falun Gong books and literature, and seizing a printer, laptop, USB drive, and printing paper from Cheng’s home. Through Zhang Guiying’s phone chat history and surveillance footage, police located and detained a third practitioner, Lu Hongfang, days later. All three were held at detention facilities in Huanggang City; a fourth practitioner, Wu Suhua, was later implicated in the same case. Minghui first reported in May 2022 that Cheng had received 7 years; new information in mid-September 2024 corrected the sentence to 8 years with a 10,000-yuan fine. The same 2024 update confirmed the other sentences: Lu Hongfang 4 years (5,000-yuan fine), Wu Suhua 3 years with 4 years probation (2,000-yuan fine), and Zhang Guiying 2 years with 3 years probation (2,000-yuan fine).

The August 31, 2026 rights-defense roster (Rights Defense Network / 维权网, Issue 131) lists Cheng Lianlian among people reported in custody — consistent with this case.
