Cheng Qiaoyun

Cheng Qiaoyun is a Falun Gong practitioner from Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. She was arrested on July 12, 2022, in a police sweep that targeted at least 135 practitioners across the city, and was later sentenced to eight years in prison. On April 20, 2023, she was transferred to the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison to serve the sentence.

Her family never received a formal verdict. According to the report, the family received an express-mail package containing four sheets of paper indicating her sentence — not an official verdict — bearing only a signature reading “Officer Hong” and a court seal, with no prosecutor, judge, or other officers named. The family also received a text message asking them to pay a 50,000-yuan court fine, which they refused. These are the reporting outlet’s claims and have no independent corroboration.

This is not Cheng’s first imprisonment. She was previously sentenced to two years for practicing Falun Gong; her term expired on May 27, 2004. Rather than releasing her, the authorities took her to the Hongweixing Brainwashing Class in Daqing, then to a detention center for fifteen days, then back to the brainwashing class, where repeated torture brought her close to death. The report states that after several days of emergency hospital treatment, she returned to the class and continued to be tortured; about forty days later her mind became unclear — she ate rice mixed with sand without noticing, stopped speaking, and could not sleep through the night — her hands were severely beaten, she could no longer walk, and she was taken away by a police officer. Her whereabouts were unknown at the time of that report. That she later resurfaced — arrested again in 2022 — is inferred from the convergent name, city, faith category, and consistent age, and is presented as probable rather than established.

No court judgment, verdict document, sentencing date, or sentencing court has been publicly reported for the eight-year sentence. A rights-defense roster dated August 31, 2026 lists her among reported current-custody cases. Her present condition and whether she remains in the women’s prison are unconfirmed.
