Hu Weiming (胡卫明)

Hu Weiming (胡卫明) is a woman from Henan and a depositor in one of Henan’s village banks whose deposits were frozen by the authorities.

On February 9, 2024 — the eve of the Lunar New Year — Hu and two fellow private-entrepreneur depositors traveled to Zhengzhou to demand the return of deposits that had been frozen for roughly 700 days. She was criminally detained on suspicion of “picking quarrels and provoking trouble” (寻衅滋事罪). Her father died on April 2, 2024; an alliance of the banks’ private-entrepreneur depositors issued an obituary condemning the Henan authorities and calling for those responsible for the depositors’ treatment to be held accountable.

According to a March 2025 report in the Epoch Times, cited in a human-rights prisoner database, Hu was tried in secret and sentenced for pursuing her deposits; she was held for 321 days and released before the 2025 Lunar New Year. Dated reports from late 2025 and 2026 describe her as free and continuing to petition over the frozen deposits. A separate rights-group prisoner report dated August 31, 2026 lists her among Henan detainees awaiting trial — a classification that conflicts with the release reporting and has not been reconciled. Her current custody status could not be confirmed.
