Profile
Peng Liangkun was a factory worker in Xiangxiang County, Hunan, documented by Asia Watch in its contemporary reporting on repression following the 1989 democracy movement.
1989 activity and administrative detention
Asia Watch reported that Peng was 25 years old and worked at a large factory in Xiangxiang County. During the 1989 democracy movement, authorities accused him of traveling to different places to encourage unrest and of disseminating information heard from overseas broadcasters including Voice of America and the BBC. These descriptions are authorities’ allegations as reported by Asia Watch, not adjudicated findings.
Peng was reported arrested after June 4, 1989. In November 1989 the Xiangxiang County Public Security Bureau imposed three years of re-education through labor. This was administrative detention rather than a criminal conviction or court sentence.
Status and evidence limits
