Wu Qingyuan, born in January 1952, is from Changchun, Jilin Province. He took up Falun Gong in 1996. Since the suppression of Falun Gong began in 1999, he has been repeatedly harassed and detained: he was sent to labor camps twice and his home was raided at least five times.
On February 29, 2024, officers of the Jingyue Avenue police station in Changchun searched his home and took him and his wife to the station for interrogation. His wife was later refused admission to the detention center on health grounds; Wu Qingyuan was held at the Changchun detention center.
He was subsequently prosecuted and sentenced to five years and six months’ imprisonment, with the recorded term running to August 28, 2029. Case records place him in the Changchun detention center’s medical ward. The specific charge is not stated in the available records.
As of August 31, 2026, he was listed among political prisoners and prisoners of conscience currently in custody in the Rights Defense Network’s Issue 131 monthly report.
