Wu Wenzhang (吴文章)

Status: currently imprisoned. Listed in the August 31, 2026 custody roster of the Rights Defense Network (维权网) in the “Sentenced to 11 years” cohort; a prisoner-monitoring record places him at Baoding Prison with an 11-year term running through June 8, 2028.

Wu Wenzhang (吴文章) is a Falun Gong practitioner from Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province. According to a December 18, 2019 entry in the Prisoners of Conscience database of China Human Rights Defenders (CHRD), he was detained on June 9, 2017, at the “Jiahe Agency” (佳合中介) in Shanhaiguan, Qinhuangdao, together with five fellow practitioners — Zuo Hongtao (左洪涛), Yuan Sujing (袁素静), Yang Xiaoyong (杨晓勇), Li Guo’ai (李国爱) — and Zuo’s wife Cui Qiurong, by officers of the Shanhaiguan Public Security Bureau. He was held at the Qinhuangdao City Detention Center. On November 16–17, 2017, four of the practitioners were tried at the Changli County Court; subsequent reporting records a retrial in 2018 and, in January 2019, sentences of 13 years for Zuo Hongtao, 11 years for Wu Wenzhang, 10 years for Li Guo’ai, and 8 years for Liu Changfu. The appeals were upheld around June 2019, and Wu Wenzhang was transferred to Baoding Prison. The charge was not stated in the sources.

Caveats

  • The case narrative (arrest, detention, trial, sentence) comes from a prisoner-monitoring NGO database, a Falun Gong–affiliated community case record, and a Falun Gong–affiliated investigation notice; no court judgment or independent non-affiliated media account has been located. Details are presented as reported, not as independently verified findings.
  • The criminal charge was not identified in any source.
  • The trial chronology differs between sources (see Media Archive): the CHRD record cites November 2017 trial dates while the community record details 2018 proceedings; the January 2019 sentences and 11-year term are consistent.
  • No consular, diplomatic, or PRC official/state-media record naming this individual was found.
