The case
Minghui reports that police took Xu Gaorui, his father Xu Zhangqing (许章清), and his mother Tu Ailian (涂爱莲) from their home on the evening of September 26, 2019, after a night-time search that, the outlet says, seized cash, bankbooks, identity documents, and other property worth more than 400,000 yuan in total. The three were criminally detained, formally arrested, and prosecuted, and the case was transferred from Xiaonan to Anlu. On November 17, 2020, the Anlu City Court tried all three together; on November 26, 2020, it sentenced Xu Zhangqing to seven years and nine months, Tu Ailian to seven years, and their son Xu Gaorui to seven years and six months, with a 10,000-yuan fine for each. The family appealed to the Xiaogan Intermediate Court, which, Minghui reports, upheld the sentences. In May 2021, Xu Gaorui and his father were taken to Shayang Prison in Hubei, where Minghui says Gaorui was held in the Fanjiatai Prison’s third area and made to do forced labor.
