Zhang Zhong (张忠), a man from Suifenhe City in Heilongjiang Province, is a Falun Gong practitioner serving a three-year-and-six-month prison sentence, with the term recorded as ending July 18, 2027.
In January 2024, Zhang was detained together with four other Falun Gong practitioners — Li Peng, Wang Lei (Li Peng’s wife), Shen Yuguo, and Jiang Xuejun — after they distributed Falun Gong leaflets, according to a November 2024 report by Minghui and a case record in the Chinese Human Rights Defenders (CHRD) prisoners-of-conscience database. (The two records differ on the exact day: the CHRD record lists January 8, 2024; the Minghui report describes the detention as the evening of January 18.) Police searched their homes. Zhang and Shen were held at the Dongning City detention center in Mudanjiang, while Li and Jiang were held at the Suifenhe detention center and Wang at the Mudanjiang detention center.
After 37 days, the Suifenhe public security bureau’s state-security brigade transferred the case to the Hailin City procuratorate, which prosecuted the five in the Hailin City court. On the morning of October 29, 2024, the Hailin City court tried the case; the Minghui report states that defense counsel made not-guilty arguments. The court sentenced Zhang Zhong to three years and six months in prison and imposed a fine. The report states that Zhang was preparing to appeal; no appeal outcome has been publicly reported, and no formal criminal charge has been publicly documented.
Weiquanwang Information Center’s monthly roster of political and conscience prisoners lists 张忠 among those in custody in its issue dated August 31, 2026, in the group reported as sentenced to three years and six months. The report’s stated practice is to remove from the list anyone who has been released; no release record for Zhang Zhong has been found. His prison placement has not been publicly documented.
