Open research question: Who were the student pickets on May 23, 1989? This case remains under investigation; the archive distinguishes the source labels “学生纠察队” and “志愿者纠察队” until organizational equivalence is established.
Students from Outside Beijing: Contemporary Reporting
Contemporary reporting provides important evidence about the scale and role of students who came to Beijing from other provinces during the 1989 movement. Associated Press reporting on May 22 described students from outside Beijing continuing to arrive at Tiananmen Square after martial law was declared. A June 3 New York Times report said that, by the final stage of the movement, the Square was occupied mainly by students from outside Beijing.

- June 3, 1989 — The New York Times on Students from Outside Beijing in Tiananmen Square
These reports strengthen the evidence for the importance of non-Beijing students while leaving questions of formal membership, representation and command structure to the separate organizational research pages.

The archive distinguishes verified fact, strong inference, working hypothesis, participant recollection, disputed claim, and unresolved question. Repository custody is not treated as proof of authenticity or organizational authorship. Important factual claims should be traceable to primary or near-primary evidence, with source genealogy and conflicting evidence preserved rather than silently collapsed.
