Zhao Pinlu was a participant in the 1989 Beijing workers’ movement and is documented in later reporting as a leading figure in the Beijing Workers’ Autonomous Federation. After June Fourth he left Mainland China and later lived in the United States, where he continued labor-rights and democracy advocacy.
He died in New York on March 9, 2004 after advanced lung cancer. His death in exile is memorialized separately from deaths in custody or during repression.
